Synopsis

The year was 1951. By a stroke of good fortune, an opportunity arose for a free weekend trip to the aircrew assessment centre at RAF Hornchurch and the chance to embark on a career as an RAF pilot. This seemed like something that was too good to pass up. The following pages detail David’s personal account of his time spent serving as a pilot in the Royal Air Force, complied from flight logbooks, journals and photo albums. It includes tales of circumnavigating the globe, near fatal experiences when flying transport and reconnaissance missions, as well as unfortunate instances of friends and comrades lost in the line of duty. But above all it provides the reader with a truly honest and detailed description of what life was like living and working as an RAF pilot during a time of great social change and international tensions. The 12 years which David served in the RAF (1951-1963) was marked with events that have only become more significant with the passage of time, including the coronation of the late Queen Elizabeth II, as well as Britain’s first atomic and hydrogen bomb tests on Australia’s mainland and Christmas Island in the Pacific, to name a few.
