Synopsis
This book is composed of accounts of life as a prisoner of war at Stalag VIIIB (344) prisoner-of-war camp at Lamsdorf. They provide a detailed and fascinating insight to the many aspects of POW life at Lamsdorf, which was probably the largest of all the German camps, with the authenticity of being the words of the POWs themselves. Some of these are in the form of diaries kept at the time, and others are accounts written afterwords.
There is no one answer to the question "What was life like as a prisoner of war?", but this book will certainly answer many questions about what actually went on in the Camp and the many Working Parties that were scattered over a large area; and how their experiences affected the inmates.
In truth, the whole picture is really like a vast jigsaw and each of the many thousands of pieces is an individual, and each of these individuals has a story; and each of these stories is complicted, fascinating, perhaps distressing in parts, and many of the stories demonstrate the strength and goodness of human nature that can emerge in severe times of trial.
This edition was published to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of prisoners of war i
