Synopsis

In 1984, energy guru and gadfly Amory Lovins made his home and established his globally significant consulting firm in a building that demonstrates his influential “soft path” approach to sustainability. The sun provides all the heat. Judicious choice of materials and meticulous construction retain it. Still operating with high performance today, this building sheds light on how to combine technical excellence with human feeling and values in a way that lasts. The story also illuminates the zig-zag American progress toward a sustainable society. The book unfolds these important topics in accessible detail.

About Rob Knapp

Rob Knapp
Rob Knapp taught for decades at Evergreen State College, an innovative, largely undergraduate institution near Seattle in the USA. Evergreen is widely known for interdisciplinary studies. He has been visiting professor or scholar most recently at Waseda University, Tokyo, and previously at the University of London (Transport Studies Group), Cornell University (Program on Science, Technology and Society), Kobe University of Commerce, and Hawaii Community College. His training in physics at Harvard and Oxford has provided a base for teaching and scholarship on energy studies, especially on the user side (efficiency and conservation). Now retired, he continues research on green architecture for mainstream buildings, with emphasis on the interplay of technical, organizational, and emotional forces in the design process and in ongoing operation.
