Six years after the events of Resident Evil 2, former police officer Leon Scott Kennedy is sent on a mission to rescue Ashley Graham, the daughter of the president of the United States, who has been kidnapped by a mysterious sect. He travels to a rural village in Spain,[16] where he encounters a group of violent villagers who dedicate their lives to Los Illuminados ("the illuminated ones" in Spanish), the cult that kidnapped Ashley. The villagers were simple farmers until they were infected by a parasite known as Las Plagas ("The Plague" in Spanish). In the village, Leon is captured by the village chief, Bitores Mendez, who injects him with the Las Plagas parasite. He is kept tied up in captivity along with Luis Sera, a former Illuminati researcher. The two work together to escape, but then go their separate ways. Leon discovers that Ashley is being held captive in a chapel, and manages to rescue her.[20] They both flee the place after Osmund Saddler, the cult leader, reveals his plans to use the Plagas injected into Ashley to cause a disaster in the United States when she returns.
