Synopsis

In Cotton Threads, the Author takes the reader back to 1659 and a baptism in rural Derbyshire. From this seemingly unremarkable event, he traces the fortunes of his Cotton ancestors through ten generations. Across several volumes, he produces narratives that meld facts, history and sociology. Using these he shows that until the middle of the nineteenth century, the Cottons were fairly well-off, even to owning land and property. That was to come to an end as the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions took hold and savaged their rural ways. Volume 1 comes to an end in 1848, That was the year that Emmanuel Cotton sets off to live and work in the slums of Liverpool. Later volumes will illustrate that the Cottons did return to a degree of prosperity but it was a long time in the making. About BRIAN NEVILLE COTTON

BRIAN NEVILLE COTTON
This study starts reaching back eleven generations to a baptism in Derbyshire in November 1659. It is from that single and simple fact that the Author traces the changing fortunes of the Cottons through the centuries. Over two volumes, a narrative emerges to meld facts, history, sociology and personal comment: this is far from a jumble of names and dates on charts. Context is all important if the lives and times of our relatives are to be understood (and lessons are to be learned). Volume I illustrates that until the middle of the nineteenth century, the Author’s forebears were relatively prosperous. Indeed their owning land and property made them respected members of their rural communities That was to be the case as far as the middle of the nineteenth century: at that time, the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions savaged their rural ways. The narrative ends in 1849 with Emmanuel Cotton’s migration to Liverpool, providing the bridge to Volume II.
