Synopsis

‘There Is No Flag Worth Dying For’, is an anthology of short stories based on real-life experiences of motherhood and life in a deeply divided society. The stories depict her life during 'The Troubles,' a violent conflict in Northern Ireland for over thirty years. The former psychiatric nurse recounts her transition from her hometown on the border to Armagh City, also known as the 'Murder Mile’. A run-in with the local Che Guevara and the family’s bond with their closest friends from the opposing side of the divide. The two husbands, both working in lawless Belfast, were neighbours, and it was more economical for them to travel together. More economical, safer, and more dangerous if people learned about their different religious persuasions. They frequently plotted on changing cars, travel times and routes to stay alive.

About Sheila P.Kelly

Northern Ireland-based author Sheila P Kelly, began her writing career as a part-time reporter for the Armagh Gazette, reporting on unusual newsworthy stories and social events in her home town Keady, South Armagh on the border with the Republic of Ireland. In her early 20’s as she navigated nursing college and marriage with young kids she had first-hand experience dealing with ordinary people, paramilitaries and security forces who experienced psychological distress during and after the armed conflict. She wanted to document the nuances of what happened during the height of the Troubles and began writing this book in the ‘80s while attending a creative writing course. However, as events unfolded, and the days got busy with work, family, and other responsibilities, time didn’t allow for it all to be documented as it happened. Knowing that those stories would eventually fade from memory, she documented some of the stories in more recent years before critical elements were forgotten.
