Synopsis

The Iran-Iraq War, or the Eight-Year War, also known in Iran as the Imposed War and the Holy Defense, is referred to in many Arab and some Western sources as the First Gulf War, which was called Saddam Hussein in Iraq during Saddam Hussein's time. It was the longest conventional war in the twentieth century and the second longest war of the century after the Vietnam War, lasting nearly eight years. The war officially began on September 22, 1980. On this day, sporadic border clashes between the two countries turned into a full-scale war with the Iraqi Air Force simultaneously attacking ten Iranian military and civilian airports and invading the country on all borders, although Iraqi officials believed that the war had increased since September 4, 1980. It began on September 4, 1980, with Iranian artillery attacks on Iraqi border cities. This war finally ended after about 8 years in August 1988 with the acceptance of fire by both sides and after leaving one million casualties and $ 1190 billion in damage to the two countries. The exchange of prisoners of war between the two countries began in 1990. Iran handed over the last group of Iraqi prisoners of war to Iraq in 2002.
