Synopsis
England is at war with France. In a small village the vicar has died suddenly and left his widow and daughter with almost nothing. Faced with this calamity Claire decides to become a portrait painter. The story of her success is tied in with a group of friends, the squire's daughter, his son standing for election, the aristocratic stranger invited down to help. There is also the adopted son, now in the navy - and then there is the Nabob, an East India man returned to England and immensely rich. This is a picture of one corner of England in 1797.
