Synopsis

This module is intended to demonstrate the application and integration of biological, economic and management principles to the husbandry and marketing of poultry. Particular reference will be made to the overall poultry industry, production system, poultry nutrition, reproduction and breeding, health and management, marketing systems and food safety management and reproductive bio-technologies. The scope for the application of scientific knowledge and research will be highlighted. The module is compiled into units which will take students through the poultry production cycle, highlighting the science and practices and their implications for birds’ productivity. Of significance is the inclusion of a unit focusing on general management of indigenous chickens in third world. Indigenous chickens are the most common type of poultry species in many rural areas in Africa and Asia. From this unit the conclusion is that there is still need to coordinate research in reviewing the productive performance of various Eco-populations of native chicken chickens in Africa and Asian in order to come up with distinct breeds for use by rural populations.
