Synopsis
Pigs are one of the most commonly raised animals in the world. They are the primary protein
source for millions of people across numerous different cultures and geographical regions. As of
2018, there were about 781.3 million of pigs worldwide, up from 776.42 million heads in the
previous year. Pig production is essentially a part of agricultural economy. It entails raising and
breeding of pigs primarily for their meat which is popularly known as pork.The need to improve efficiency, lower production costs, and supply a product that meets consumer expectations are the key elements required for producers to remain profitable and viable.
About NEVER ASSAN
Never Assan is a Full Professor of Livestock Production & Breeding with the Zimbabwe Open University and a Fellow of the Zimbabwean Academy of Science. Coordinates the Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Management in the Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Animal Production at Bulawayo Regional Campus. Formerly, Principal Livestock Research Officer at Matopos Research Institute, working on Indigenous Cattle Improvement Program. Published thirteen (13) books and more than 200 research articles pertaining to cattle, goats and sheep production.
