Synopsis
Raising beef cattle can be a profitable enterprise. However, there are several management skills that each beef producer should have to be successful. Each beef cattle enterprise has different resources: land, labor, capital, feed and management. To raise beef cattle profitably, you must manage these resources to maximize returns. The beef cattle module offers knowledge into the key principles of intensive and extensive beef cattle production systems, herd management, breeding, nutrition, and health and disease management. This module gives students the opportunity to learn the principles of beef cattle management, breeding and production. Elements such as nutrition, production, reproduction, and disease recognition, control and treatment, are dealt with in detail. On the other hand, the module aims at helping students gain the foundation knowledge to start their own beef cattle enterprise or to expand the theory knowledge of an existing beef cattle producer. Students are empowered to make informed decisions about the management requirements of beef cattle through understanding and explaining the principles and practices of beef cattle husbandry and management in SADC region.
About NEVER ASSAN
Never Assan is a Full Professor of Livestock Production & Breeding with the Zimbabwe Open University and a Fellow of the Zimbabwean Academy of Science. Coordinates the Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Management in the Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Animal Production at Bulawayo Regional Campus. Formerly, Principal Livestock Research Officer at Matopos Research Institute, working on Indigenous Cattle Improvement Program. Published thirteen (13) books and more than 200 research articles pertaining to cattle, goats and sheep production.
