Synopsis

Afghanistan, which is officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked South and Central Asian country. Afghanistan borders on the east and south by Pakistan; on the west by Iran; on the north by Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan; and on the northeast by China. The first Durrani emperor, Ahmad Shah, known as the founder of the Afghan nation, united the Pashtun tribes and founded an empire in 1760 that stretched to Delhi and the Arab Sea. In 1919 Afghanistan signed up to the Rawalpindi pact, which ended the Third Anglo-Afghan War and marks the official date of independence for Afghanistan. Afghanistan was again a balance point between two world powers in the interwar period; Habibullah 's son Amanullah (ruled 1919–29) skillfully manipulated the new Rivalry between Britain and the Soviet, and established relations with major countries. The first constitution of Afghanistan was introduced in 1923 by king Amanullah khan. The Taliban, in 1996 gained control of much of the country. The fundamentalist interpretation of Islam were used.
