The Perfect Family

In 1996, something happened on a maternity ward that was never supposed to be discovered: a seventh child, erased from every record that mattered. Thirty years later, Detective Inspector Kaisa Niemi is called to investigate the murder of Henrik Salonen, a man who carried more secrets than anyone realized. What she uncovers is not a single crime but a web of altered identities, swapped records, and families built on lies they never knew they were living. Told through hospital documents, witness transcripts, personal letters, and fragments of verse, this collection assembles its mystery piece by piece, the way memory and evidence both do, incomplete, contradictory, and impossible to look away from. Anna Salonen doesn't know if her birth was real. Aino Virtanen was raised as someone else's daughter. Sofia Lehto simply vanished. Six families, one missing child, and a handwritten note scrawled on a wall: EVERY FAMILY HAS A FIRST LIE. For readers who love true crime that digs into identity and institutional failure, and who don't mind assembling the truth themselves, one record, one interview, one fractured piece at a time.
