When the Kings of the Underworld Gather

In February 1945, as the Second World War was drawing to an end, Hubert Harzon was captured by the Russians. What followed was a long and uncertain journey that would keep him separated from his family until July 1953. For nine years, his family had no idea where he was, what had happened to him, or whether he was still alive. While they waited without answers, Hubert faced the harsh reality of Soviet captivity. His story takes the reader through labour camps, prisons and long transports across Siberia. Along the way, he endured hardship, uncertainty and repeated attempts to escape, never knowing whether he would ever regain his freedom or see his family again. When the Kings of the Underworld Gather is the true story of Hubert Harzon’s years in captivity. It is a story of survival, determination and hope during an extraordinary period of his life, from his capture in February 1945 until his final release in July 1953.
