Malin Kundang: The Stone Son of West Sumatra

A poor boy from the coast of West Sumatra sails away to seek his fortune — and returns years later on a great ship, rich, proud, and married into wealth. When his aged mother rushes to embrace him, he denies her before the whole harbour. What follows is Indonesia's most famous curse: a storm, a wreck, and a kneeling stone figure that still bows on the beach at Padang today. The legend of Malin Kundang, retold in full.
