We do not come into the world free. We arrive after bodies, stories, wounds, legacies, fears, and words that preceded us. The anvil strikes before we know how to respond. It would therefore be brutal to tell the wounded being: “You only have to want to.” But it would be just as dangerous to tell them: “There is nothing you can ever do about it.” Between these two lies, this book seeks a path. A path of active lucidity. To understand the causes, but not to lie down in them. To acknowledge the wound, but refuse its reign. To unmask resentment, complaint, nihilism, cynicism, and moral facades. To search, within the very fabric of our determinisms, for the fragile space where a gesture remains possible. This gesture can be almost nothing. A word less false. A violence not passed on. A requested pardon. A complaint transformed into a request. A boundary set. A joy welcomed without pretense.
