The Peat

In the Iron Age, in a small village on the edge of a vast peat bog, a child is born under a shadow of shame. Lidewei knows who Aisje’s father is. Kai refuses to acknowledge her. To protect Lidewei from the disgrace of raising a child alone, Sibbe marries her. But as Aisje grows older, the villagers begin to notice that she is different. Aisje does not speak. No one knows what lies behind her silence. And as the years pass, the villagers grow increasingly uneasy around her. Some begin to believe that there is something unnatural about the girl. Fear spreads through the village. They call her a witch. But what is Aisje really? And what secrets lie buried beneath the peat?
