Black Histories in the Heart of Europe

Through a mix of memoir and cultural history, this hybrid work challenges us to rethink what we consider Black history in the Central and Eastern European region, moving beyond mere presence toward participation, connection, and belonging. More than 90 narratives and anecdotes are presented alongside frameworks for considering narrative agency and belonging. An extensive reader's guide also serves to inform and inspire curiosity and exploration. Identities exist beyond race, ethnicity, and nationality. Encounters occur in contexts beyond slavery, war, and displacement. Connections form beyond intentionality and fate. History isn't always white or black. Especially when it's Czech, Hungarian, Polish, and Slovak entwined in African, American and other frames.
