Our author, Kathy Owen, is a storyteller at heart. Born in Jamaica and shaped by the rhythms of its culture, she has spent her life weaving together words, sounds, and images across borders and peoples. A former radio DJ and television anchor, Kathy’s voice once carried across the airwaves — and now lives on through stories. Her passion for languages and human connection inspired her to create and manage a language academy with branches in two autonomous regions of Spain, where for over a decade she blended creativity and tradition into every lesson. Founding and growing this academy stands as one of her greatest challenges and achievements to date. Fluent in Spanish and deeply curious about other languages, Kathy enjoys reading in French, Galician, Portuguese, and Italian — all part of her ongoing journey to understanding people through their tongues, a theme that pulses through much of her work. Returning to acting brought Kathy back to the stage and screen, including a dramatic one-woman show at the Edinburgh Festival and an appearance in an Italian sci-fi film — a brief role, but one of the most enjoyable sets she has worked on, thanks to a spectacular crew. With Letters to Hillary, Kathy invites readers into a layered world of connected short stories, each echoing her love of music and delving into the human condition. The book features Kathy’s visual contributions, created through personal paintings, crafted photography, and digital techniques, with each piece carefully shaped to complement her stories. She divides her time between London and northern Spain, continuing to write, perform, teach, and learn — always with curiosity, always with heart.
