Synopsis
Dublin in the 1990's is unchanged from previous decades. Once the second city of the Empire, the Irish capital is now a shabby, grey city where jobs are scarce and the church maintains its stranglehold on Irish society. As the century draws to a close however, things are finally beginning to change, with both clergy and politicians out of step with the times.
Each summer, James Keating begins a journal for the new football season. In 1991, all he wants is to see Manchester United win the league for the first time in 25 years. Then he meets Olwen Edwards, and he begins to want much more. Olwen is beautiful, artistic and impulsive; James is naive, shy and innocent, yet a romance blossoms between the two. Olwen can't see a future for herself in Ireland, and before long, James can't see a future without Olwen.
The songs, movies, sporting events and current affairs of the era provide a compelling backdrop to Second City, a love story set in Dublin.
